According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, pedestrian accidents represent the second largest category of motor vehicle deaths in the United States after motor vehicle and motorcycle accidents. Statistics have shown that over a 12-year period, 14% to 17% of annual traffic deaths involved pedestrians. This is a national crisis, with the overall cost of lost wages and medical expenses totalling billions of dollars annually. Sadly, children under the age of 19 account for approximately 40% of those accidents.
